    Limiting your field of view

Zion has many grand landscapes but during my recent workshop there, we concentrated on limiting the field of view to capture compositions of smaller scenes. This small waterfall above was just 30 yards from the main road and contained graceful curves and nice colors.

A small section from another stream within the canyons of Zion produced this mosaic below of color from the rocks in the stream and the sky.

In that same section of canyon, the shadow of tree limbs silhouette against a lichen covered rock.

In the town of Springdale, UT at the entrance to Zion, there are a number of roadside stores that sell all kinds of rocks. Many are very colorful and another workshop participant, Jennifer King, introduced me to the fun of shooting these rocks.  They have great color!  Jennifer is a very talented photographer, you can see her work at www.jenniferkingphoto.com.

      Zion

Looking through my images form a recent trip to Zion National Park in Utah, I came across these three which are representative of the park. The horizontal and vertical line formations of the sandstone above are found throughout the east side of the park. The largest formation has the name Checkerboard Mesa.

Along the River Walk trial next to the Virgin River, flowers take advantage of the wet slopes, like this Shooting Star below.

The color from the canyon walls and the blue sky reflect off the Virgin River in the photograph below.

Very Van Gogh “Starry Night”-like. Beautiful.
